Trans-Siberian Orchestra

A few weeks ago, Seth surprised me with tickets to a Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas concert. I was thrilled! TSO makes some of my favorite Christmas music. They rock hard to some classic Christmas carols, and for this concert they would be performing one of their rock operas that I have on CD.

The concert was scheduled for the day before Thanksgiving, and Seth's parents would be in town, so he invited them to come along with us. He told them it was Christmas music like you would hear in the Home Alone movies. I thought that was a strange description, since I didn't remember Home Alone rocking that hard, but I didn't say anything.

I should have.

When Seth's parents dressed up for the concert, I should have sensed that some miscommunication had happened. But it's not really my business how formal people want to be for a rock concert.

When the long-haired electric guitarists started riffing Christmas music against a backdrop of flames and strobe lights,  and Seth's mouth dropped open, I knew somewhere some wires got crossed.

As it turns out, Seth had mistaken Trans-Siberian Orchestra for Mannheim Steamroller, another one of my favorite Christmas bands. Mannheim Steamroller is to Trans-Siberian Orchestra what Apollo is to a mountain lion. One purrs; the other roars.

Here's a glimpse of the lights and the flames so that you can pretend you were right there with us:

Amid all this, there was Seth's sweet mother, expecting lovely carols performed by a fancy orchestra from Siberia, if the name of the band was anything to go by (which it's not). She was totally unprepared for the audio and visual onslaught that lasted for a full 3 and a half hours, counting the two encores. But she was a really good sport about it, and she has not disowned me for my taste in music.

Seth's dad, while surprised, called upon the inner hardcore rock enthusiast from his youth, and he thoroughly enjoyed himself. I expected him to start head banging along with the backup dancers he affectionately named "The Zombie Girls."

The concert was amazing, if about 300 decibels too loud. They ended the show with fireworks. Inside the building. It was epic. I'm so glad I got to share this fun holiday experience with Seth and his wonderful mom and dad.

The pictures are awesome. I can just imagine my parents shocked faces as the flames started. :)

I laughed so hard while reading this post. I think my parents, especially my mom, would have reacted the same way. It sounds like you guys had a great time, and I love your pictures! Yay for Christmas!
